Roborock S5 Features and Specifications
The most important feature of the Roborock S5 is its LDS advanced navigation system, based on the LIDAR - the laser scanner which scans 5 times per seconds full 360°, allowing the unit to create full, very accurate map of the area. Also, such map can be saved for future use.
As 2-in-1 unit, Roborock S5 can be used as bare floor mop and as robot vacuum cleaner:
- as mopping robot, Roborock S5 uses thin water tank and mop cleaner pad that are attached to the rear of the unit, by sliding the water tank and mop pad under the unit. As the unit traverse the floors, it mops the area. Note that the mopping function is optional, and some users don't even use it, but it is nice option to have.
Mopping function should be used only on the sealed floors that tolerate such cleaning!
Bionic design of its mopping system keeps a steady water stream, preventing water stains when the unit it at rest. The edge of the mopping pad adheres tightly to the mop holder, preventing edge curling.
- as robot vacuum cleaner, Roborock S5 uses one side brush and one central 'floating' brushroll, combined with variable suction to thoroughly clean bare floors, area rugs, low- and medium-pile carpets.
Note: Although it comes with numerous features, Roborock S5 is easy to use and maintain robot cleaner. Nonetheless, when it arrives, be sure to read the manual thoroughly, to install the latest Mi Home App and if required, update the firmware of the unit to the latest version.
Unlike many similar robot vacuums, Roborock S5 comes with one side brush. However, Roborock S5 features side brush with the variable speed - when the unit is cleaning floors, side brush sweeps with decreased speed of 130 rpm, preventing the scattering of the dirt and other floor objects. When edge cleaning, side brush speed is increased to 330 rpms, allowing thorough cleaning of the wall edges.
Main brushroll is of 'floating' design, allowing it to adjust itself to the floors being cleaned/sweeped at the moment.
Brushroll is of classic design and from time to time it is up to the user to clean it from tangled lint, fibers, hair and similar debris.
Roborock S5 features diameter of 13.78 inches (35 cm), height of 3.78 inches (9.6 cm) and it weighs 7.72 lbs (3.5 kg). Although there are more compact units on the market, Roborock S5 is still compact enough to reach under most of the furniture and clean thoroughly.
Roborock S5 features high-capacity lithium battery of 5200 mAh, enabling the unit to clean >200 m2 area on one battery charge, and if required, thanks to its LDS Smart Navigation system, unit can recharge it self and resume with the cleaning task, if required.
Maximum operating time on a single battery charge is 150 minutes, when vacuuming bare floors. Charging time of the fully discharged battery is 240 minutes (4 hours).
Roborock S5 is rated at 58 watts and during operation, maximum noise level during normal operation (no issues with the suction, wheels, brushes and similar) is ~68 dB.
Roborock S5 features several cleaning modes, including carpet mode, quiet mode, mopping mode, turbo mode and maximum suction mode. All these options are adjustable using WiFi and Mi Home App - if you don't intend to use Mi Home or any similar App, get a robot vacuum cleaner with IR remote control.
Maximum suction of the Roborock S5 is very decent 2000 Pa - we say 'very decent', but that is actually one of the strongest suctions among the robot vacuums, but less than suction of full size home vacuums.
When cleaning carpets, Roborock S5 identifies them and switch itself into the 'Carpet Pressurization' mode by switching the suction to the maximum, deeply cleaning the low and medium-pile carpets. High-pile carpets can be vacuumed too, but the unit might have issues with climbing onto such thick carpets and traversing them.
Roborock S5 is able to cross obstacles up to 0.79 inches (20 mm) in height. Also, it comes with advanced programing that enables the unit to free itself after getting stuck - or at least to try to free itself.
Although it comes with high-precision LDS (LIDAR) mapping sensor, Roborock S5 features other sensors as well, allowing it to adjust itself to ever-changing environment.
These sensors include bumper sensor, cliff sensors, object/obstacle/wall sensors etc. Nonetheless, it is quiet normal, although rare that Roborock S5 touches chair legs, sofa edges or similar objects.
Cliff detectors prevent the unit from stumbling off the stairs. They do their task well, just be sure to clean them occasionally to prevent false-positives (cliff falsely detected) and especially issues with the detection of actual stairs.
Personally, people with dark carpets reaching all to the stairs, should create virtual walls via Mi Home App and, if required, to add magnetic strips under the carpets near the stairs. Or remove the carpets that can confuse even the most intelligent robot vacuums, Roborock S5 included.
Roborock S5 comes with 480 ml large dirt cup and with 150 ml optional water tank.
Dirt cup is large enough for daily cleaning even of the heavy soiled areas, but it should also be maintained on a daily basis.
Air filtration is good, but personally, it could be better - it is based on the washable E11 HEPA air filter.
Note: according to the standard, E11 HEPA standard means that the air filter is able to retain 95% of 0.3 microns or larger particles. Personally, it is OK, but it could be better.
HEPA air filter is coated with waterproof teflon and it is designed to retain almost all of its filter performance after a year of normal use.
It is recommended to wash the air filter once a week, without scrubbing it, under the stream of water. When the air filter is completely dry, it can be reassembled back into the unit. Never operate the unit with wet filter - it can damage the unit and void the warranty.
Note: some users order additional air filter - one filter is washed and let air dry thoroughly, while other filter is in use for a week ...
Roborock S5 support the use of saved high-precision map, zone cleaning, no-go zones, daily scheduling and similar.
Virtual walls in the forms of IR beacons are not supported, but the unit support the use of virtual walls via Mi Home App (just draw the line and the unit will not cross it), or set the magnetic strips on the floors. Or both.
At the moment, Roborock S5 is available in three colors: white, rose-gold and black. All these units are Roborock S5, but usually they also feature another number behind '5', for example, they are often labeled as S50, S51 and S55.
Roborock S5 comes with 12 months limited warranty.

Roborock Xiaowa Lite C10 (C1) is an entry level robot vacuum cleaner with no mapping option - it navigates the area randomly, sensing objects and obstacles with the set of the onboard sensors, adapting to every new situation. When the battery is discharged, it returns to the docking station, but it doesn't resume the cleaning task. Roborock Xiaowa Lite C10 is robot vacuum only - it features no mopping option.
Roborock Xiaowa E20 (E2*) and Roborock Xiaowa E30 (E3*) are well balanced designs, offering plenty of features at relatively acceptable prices. Roborock Xiaowa E30 features larger battery and is suitable for larger apartments and homes than Roborock Xiaowa E20. Both Roborock Xiaowa E20 and E30 feature mapping and 'recharge and resume' options. Roborock Xiaowa E20 (E2*) and Roborock Xiaowa E30 (E3*) support both vacuuming and mopping functions.
As one can see, Roborock S5 (S50, S51, S55) comes with the most features of all these models, but it is also the most expensive one. Roborock S5 (S50, S51, S55) features advanced LDS (LIDAR based) advanced navigation, high precision maps, zone cleaning, no-go zones etc.
Note: Roborock robotic vacuums support the use of Mi Home App (Android, iOS), Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant, but they don't support the use of IR remote control.
