ILIFE A4s Robot Vacuum Cleaner Review

ILIFE A4s Robot Vacuum Cleaner is improved version of very popular ILIFE A4 robot vacuum cleaner. ILIFE A4s comes with several improvements, but the design philosophy is still the same - to manufacture simple to use and maintain robot vacuum cleaner, that helps the user to keep home clean and tidy.

ILIFE A4s doesn't have WiFi connectivity nor magnetic strips or virtual walls to limit its range of motion, and with simple navigation system it takes some time for the unit to clean required area, but in the end, it does its job at affordable price.

ILIFE A4s Robot Vacuum Cleaner Features and Specifications

ILIFE A4s vacuum is very compact unit, with diameter of 12.2 inches (31 cm) and height of 3 inches (~7.6 cm). Empty unit weighs 4.9 pounds (~2.2 kg) and is easy to pick up and move around if and when required.

ILIFE A4s robot vacuum is designed for picking up of dry dirt only from bare floors like tiles, hardwood, marble, linoleum, laminate and similar and from low-pile carpets.

Thanks to improved V-shaped main motorized brush it can clean medium-pile carpets as well, but high-pile carpets and thick area rugs can cause issues not only with cleaning, but also with traversing of such surfaces.

ILIFE A4s features so-called the Gen 3 CyclonePower cleaning system, which combines a pair of side brushes, one main v-shaped motorized brush with a relatively strong suction, providing thorough cleaning of various surfaces.

ILIFE A4s features automatic scheduling program, once a day, seven days per week, and in combination with automatic docking and recharging it can really help users to keep home clean. When positioning the charging station, be sure to leave some 3-4 feet (1 meter) of free space on both sides of charging station and some 6-7 feet (2 meters) of free space in front of charging station - this free space helps the unit to locate the charging station and to dock with it for automatic charging.

When the battery is discharged, it takes up to 5 hours to fully charge it. When the battery is fully charged, unit can operate up to 120 minutes and cover up to 2100 sq.ft. (~195 sq. m).

Dirt bin capacity is 0.45 liters, and that is not much - however, this is very compact unit and such capacity is rather good, considering unit's height (3 inches) and diameter (12.2 inches).

Depending on how dirty floors get, it is sometimes required to empty the dirt bin after each use - this maintenance task is common for all similar robot vacuums.

Air filtration is rather good, which is very important for people with pets and small children. Air filtration is based on mechanical air pre-filter (primary filter), sponge filter and high-performance HEPA air filter.

Note: ILIFE claims that high-performance filter is HEPA grade air filter, but it doesn't state actual HEPA level. Also, pre-filter and sponge filters are washable, but HEPA air filter is not washable. HEPA filter should be tapped onto hard surface, and eventually replaced with a new one. Although ILIFE A4s is simple to use robot vacuum, it is highly recommended to read the manual before the very first use/charging.

ILIFE A4s Cleaning Modes

ILIFE A4s comes with several cleaning modes, including:

- Auto cleaning mode is used for everyday cleaning. In this mode, robot cleans accessible area until it is stopped by low battery event (20% or lower) or by the user. When the battery is low, unit will locate the docking station, dock automatically and recharge itself. However, it will not resume the cleaning task.

- Edge cleaning mode is used for cleaning wall edges and similar surfaces - in this mode, unit simply follows the wall and clean its edge.

- Spot cleaning mode is used for cleaning rather dirty areas - in this mode, unit moves in spiral pattern, thoroughly cleaning required area.

- Mini-Room mode is used for cleaning smaller rooms, greatly preserving the operating battery life.

To help with the navigation and to avoid bumping into walls, furniture and other objects and potential obstacles and to prevent the unit from falling off the cliffs (stairs, for example), unit features a range of various sensors.

Since ILIFE A4s doesn't feature magnetic strip or virtual wall for limiting the cleaning area, user has to close the doors in order to prevent the unit from exiting the area.

Due to the use of cliff sensors, unit can have issues with the cleaning of really dark carpets, because such surfaces can trick the cliff sensors and prevent the unit from traversing and cleaning them.

Thus, some users even use dark/black matte duct tape to prevent the unit from exiting certain areas - such technique can be used with other similar robot vacuums, but it is NOT officially recommended/supported by their manufacturers.

ILIFE A4 and ILIFE A4s Comparison

ILIFE A4s is improved version of ILIFE A4 and it comes with several interesting and important design changes. Main similarities and differences are given in the following table:

ILIFE Robot Vacuum A4 A4s
Self-Charging Yes Yes
Battery Lithium Ion 2600 mAh Lithium Ion 2600 mAh
Motor Brushed Brushless
Operating Time 90 minutes 120 minutes
 Scheduling Yes Yes
Anti-Cliff Sensors Yes Yes
 Anti-Collision Sensors Yes Yes
 Max Mode Yes Yes
 Anti-Winding System Yes Yes
CyclonePower Cleaning System Yes Yes
Tangle-Free System No Yes
Mini-Room Cleaning Mode No Yes

As one can see, in order to simplify maintenance, ILIFE A4s comes with improved design decreasing the human and pet hair tangles around the moving parts.

Also, A4s features Mini-Room cleaning mode, enabling the unit to quickly clean smaller areas and to return to the charging station to recharge itself, without fully discharging the battery first - such use of the built-in battery prolongs its operating life.

Although both units use practically the same battery, operating time on a single battery charge is increased from 90 to 120 minutes thanks to the use of more efficient brushless motor.

Note: there are other small improvements that are not visible to naked eye and are harder to spot, but they improve overall performances and safety. For example, castor wheel has a sensor that can detect attempt of crossing the door step and since the unit can get stuck on such obstacle, unit will try to go back instead of going forward.

ILIFE A4s Maintenance

ILIFE A4s maintenance is relatively easy and straightforward.

Dirt bin must be emptied after each use, especially when the unit is used on more soiled floors.

Primary air filter and foam filter should be washed (and thoroughly dried) periodically, while HEPA filter should be cleaned and after some time replaced.

When the side brushes and main motorized brush are worned out, they should be replaced.

Users should also regularly check and clean cliff and obstacle sensors and charging pins. Also, any rotating part should be checked for tangled hair, lint or fibers.

But first, read the manual :)

For Short: ILIFE A4s doesn't yet support WiFi connectivity nor it support the use of Amazon Alexa or Google Home Assistant.

However, if you are looking for a simple to use robot vacuum that can be scheduled to clean every day and to recharge itself after vacuuming, consider ILIFE A4s. It is an affordable unit with low maintenance costs and it comes with 1 year warranty.
