DeWalt DCV581H Features and Specifications
DeWalt DCV581H is workshop vacuum cleaner/blower combo unit.
As the vacuum cleaner it is designed to pick both dry and wet dirt (wet-dry vacuum), store it into the 2-gallon tank and using HEPA air filter, thoroughly filter air before releasing it back into the vacuumed area.
As the air blower, DeWalt DCV581H can be used to clean areas that can't be reached and cleaned, not even with the narrow cleaning tools like crevice tool and similar.
Note: DeWalt DCV581H is simple to use and maintain vacuum cleaner/blower unit, but before the very first use, be sure to thoroughly read the manual.
Flexible cleaning hose is stored onboard the unit and is used as both vacuuming hose and blower hose. Hose is 5 feet (~1.53 m) long, with the diameter of 1-1/4 inches (32 mm) and is made rather sturdy and crush-resistant - but, just in case, try to avoid jumping onto it! :)
Power cord is also 5 feet (~1.53 m) long and could be longer. But, as most workshops and building sites already have extensions cords for other corded tools much stronger than DeWalt DCV581H, power cord is long enough.
When using extension cord, note that during corded operation, unit draws 2.6 Amps of current for 290 W of power (unit is powered using only 120V mains power - don't try it on 220 V!).
Power cord is wrapped around the handle and can be unwrapped quickly and easily when required.
DeWalt DCV581H comes with two cleaning tools included: Wide Nozzle Cleaning Attachment and Crevice Tool. Wide Nozzle Cleaning Attachment comes already attached to the hose, while Crevice Tool is carried in the handle.
Note: although hose diameter is standard 1.25 inches (32 mm) vacuum hose diameter, and theoretically DeWalt DCV581H can use other cleaning attachments from other manufacturers, such practice is not supported/recommended.
During operation, maximum air flow is 31 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute), which is acceptable for the unit of this size and use - more important is suction/blower pressure and according to the most independent reviews/tests, suction/blower pressure is good enough for most applications.
As said before, DeWalt DCV581H can be powered via power cord or via onboard battery, allowing great operational flexibility.
According to the manufacturer, DeWalt DCV581H can operate using DeWalt 18V NiCd, NiMH, or Li-Ion battery pack, or 20V MAX Li-Ion battery pack. Or just plug it into the 120V AC wall power socket and do the job.
Although not officially recommended, but if possible, go for 20V MAX Li-Ion battery pack.
Note: when the battery is plugged into the unit, and power cord is plugged into the wall socket or extension hose, DeWalt DCV581H does NOT charge the battery - one has to use battery charger to charge the battery.
To allow unit to be used in various situations, DeWalt DCV581H is designed as wet-dry vacuum cleaner with extra large dirt tank, being able to hold 2 gallons(!) of dirt.
Also, to prevent all this dirt from exiting with the exhaust air, DeWalt DCV581H features wet-dry, washable HEPA air filter that captures at least 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger particles.
Since proper operation depends on the air filter condition, be sure to clean the filter regularly by tapping it onto the inner side of trash can. Also, if required, it can be rinsed with the plain water.
Note: never operate the unit without the air filter. Also, never use brush or similar cleaning aid to clean the filter - brushing the filter can damage it.
DeWalt DCV580H vs. DeWalt DCV581H
DeWalt manufactures two very similar units, DCV580H and DCV581H, with few small, but important differences.
DeWalt DCV580H and DeWalt DCV581H share the same design philosophy and most of the features, except that DeWalt DCV581H can be operated using onboard battery or power cord - corded/cordless operation. DeWalt DCV580H can be operated only as cordless vacuum cleaner using onboard battery.
Note: there are some claims that DeWalt DCV581H comes with true HEPA air filter, and that DeWalt DCV580H comes with standard high efficiency air filter, but both units use the same HEPA air filter, so ...
DeWalt 20V MAX Batteries
DeWalt DCV581H can be powered using the range of DeWalt batteries, but generally, the best results are achieved using DeWalt 20V MAX batteries.
Recommended model is DeWalt DCB204 battery - this is 4.0 Ah battery, weighing 1.42 pounds (~0.65 kg).
Its maximum voltage is 20 volts (hence the name) and nominal voltage is 18 V. It features 5 lithium ion cells, 3-LED charge gauge system, no memory effect, fade-free power operation, almost no self-discharge and it can be used for 100+ different DeWalt cordless tools.
For Short: If you already own DeWalt 20V MAX battery/batteries and charger, and you need a good and versatile workshop vacuum cleaner/blower, purchasing DCV581H as a bare tool is recommended.
If you plan on purchasing more DeWalt 20V MAX cordless tools, purchasing a DCV581H, DB204 (or DB204s) and a charger is recommended.
