The Best Air Purifiers for Smoke for 2021
Air purifiers for smoke must be able to capture and filter out very fine particles of tobacco smoke as well as VOCs and other smells and odors.
In order to minimize the number of smoke particles and odors in the air is to quit smoking, air purifiers for smoke can be very helpful in reducing not only the number of smoke particles and odors in the air, but also other dangerous pollutants like pet dander, pollen, dust, bacteria, viruses, and other potential causes of asthma, allergies, and other illnesses.
Updated: January 20, 2021.
If You are a smoker or there are smokers at your home or in the office, the only way to get rid of the tobacco smoke from the air that everyone breathes is to quit smoking or to smoke somewhere else.
Air purifiers for smoke are very important home appliances for keeping the air at home cleaner and safer to breathe - regardless of the quality of the air purifier and its features and specifications, there is no air purifier that will 100% purify air from tobacco smoke, if somebody is actually smoking in the room at that moment.
Also, with various other pollutants causing respiratory and other health issues and decreasing the quality of life, a good home HEPA air purifier, preferably with a layer of active carbon, is becoming an essential part of many households, just like fridge, TV, vacuum cleaner, and similar.

Air Purifiers for Smoke Intro
In order to do their task properly, air purifiers for smoke must come with certain features that ensure proper operation and ease of use and maintenance.
Such features include airflow, intended area size, operating modes, WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity, CADR ratings, HEPA level, etc.
Airflow of the air purifier is given in CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) or sometimes in cubic meters per minute or even hours and describes the maximum airflow through the air purifier. The larger the airflow, the more air is able to go through the air purifier and be filtered/purified. Of course, in order to increase the airflow, air purifiers must use stronger motors and larger fans, requiring more power and generating more noise.
Operating Modes allow the user to set preferred air purifier mode depending on the current conditions - most air purifiers feature at least three cleaning modes, including Sleep, Normal, and Turbo/Maximum mode.
- Sleep mode features the smallest CFM, but it is also the quietest mode and is usually used during the night, hence the name.
- Normal operating mode balances between CFM and the noise and is commonly used during the day.
- Maximum/Turbo mode is the noisiest cleaning mode, but it also allows the air purifier to clean a certain area in the least possible time.
Many air purifiers feature much more operating modes, allowing the user to set the preferred one, or the air purifier automatically adjust itself to the new conditions.
CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) Rating of the air purifier is measured by ANSI/AHAM AC-1 standard.
Test is rather simple and straightforward - new air purifier with new air filter(s) is placed in 1008 cubic feet testing chamber, with the amount of air pollutants measured. After turning the air purifier ON, it operates for 20 minutes at full power (Max or Turbo mode), after which the reduction of air pollutants is measured.
For example, if the air purifier has a CADR rating for smoke of 150, that means that the air purifier is able to reduce the number of smoke particles to the same level as it would be achieved by adding 150 cubic feet of clean air each minute - roughly, CADR rating is equal to the amount of air that the air purifier is able to clean each minute for each type of particles, given in CFM.
Common CADR values for home HEPA air purifiers is given in the following list:
- Dust: 30 to 300 CADR,
- Pollen: 40 to 350 CADR,
- Tobacco Smoke: 30 to 350 CADR, etc.
Obviously, larger and stronger air purifiers feature higher CADR ratings, but sometimes strong airflow reduces HEPA level as it 'pushes' smaller particles through the air filters.
ACH (Air Changes per Hour) refers to the number of times that an air purifier can purify/refresh the air in a room - the higher the ACH number, the better the air quality.
The exact ACH number is hard to tell because it depends on the volume of the cleaned area and that depends on the floor size (sq. ft. or m2) and the height of the ceiling.
ACH of 2, for example, means that the air purifier is able to clean the air in the designated area 2 times per hour.
HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) Air Filtration Levels basically tell how air purifier is good in stopping (capturing) small particles (typically 0.3 microns or larger, although there are some units being designed for 0.1 microns particles).
The following chart lists various classifications of air filters and air filtration according to the EN 1822 standard:
|Filter Group||Filter Class||Filtration Efficiency||Penetration|
|Efficiency Particulate Air (EPA) Filters||E10||85 %||15 %|
|E11||95 %||5 %|
|E12||99.5 %||0.5 %|
|High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters||H13||99.95 %||0.05 %|
|H14||99.995 %||0.005 %|
|Ultra-Low Penetration Air (ULPA) Filters||U15||99.9995 %||0.0005 %|
|U16||99.99995 %||0.00005 %|
|U17||99.999995 %||0.000005 %|
'True HEPA' air purifier is able to capture at least 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger particles and technically stands between HEPA H13 and HEPA H14 levels.
The size of most common pollutants at homes are:
- flu virus: 0.1 μm,
- tobacco smoke: 0.1-1.0 μm, with the most particles being 0.2-0.25 μm in size,
- bacteria: 0.3-10.0 μm,
- pollen: 10.0-100.0 μm,
- pet and human hair: 30.0-200.0 μm,
- dust mites: 90.0-600.0 μm,
- sand grains: 50.0-1000.0 μm, etc.
Note: While flu and similar viruses are rather small and hardly directly captured by air purifiers, if present, they are found in micro-droplets in the air that are mostly much larger than 0.1 μm. However, tobacco smoke particles are very fine particles, with most of them being smaller than 0.3 μm - although HEPA levels are measured for 0.3 μm or larger particles, such air filters are able to capture even smaller particles, although not as efficiently as larger particles.
That is why some manufactures provide air filtration information for 0.1 μm particles - such air purifiers are highly recommended for heavy smokers.
Air Filtration Systems are based on several air filtration layers, including:
- mechanical air pre-filters capture larger particles and protect the inner filters from mechanical damage. Mechanical air pre-filters are often separated from other air filters and are washable.
- layer of activated carbon captures smells, odors, and other harmful particles and chemicals, including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) generated by smoking and some of the smoke particles - the lower the airspeed through the active carbon layer, the better the air filtration is. Activated carbon layer air filters are generally not washable - even some washable models must be replaced after some time in use.
- zeolite is a microporous mineral that is sometimes combined with the active carbon layer in order to improve absorption and air filtration. Zeolite also absorbs the moisture from the air and air filters containing zeolite and up to the point, activated carbon, should NOT be used in areas with large humidity, like bathrooms and similar.
- HEPA mechanical air filter captures tiny particles from the airflow, allowing the unit to expel practically the clean air.
- UV-C bulb in combination with Titanium-Dioxide (TiO2) sanitizes the air and destroys remaining VOCs. However, UV-C light creates ozone in tiny amounts - since ozone is harmful to human lungs, users can turn off UV-C light, although created ozone is usually by far below safe ozone levels.
- Ion generator creates ions that stick to the smallest air particles, capturing even viruses and other small particles, including tobacco smoke. Air purifiers with ion generators are great, but the bulk of air filtering should be done using an activated carbon layer and HEPA air filter. Also, ion generators produce ozone in trace amounts - far below safe/recommended levels, but ...
- some components of the air filtration system may feature antimicrobe coating in order to prevent the buildup of bacteria and germs in general inside the air purifier.
Note on the air filters: Since high-quality are filters are at the very center of operation, always purchase OEM air filters.
WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity and the support for smartphone App allows the user to control and monitor air purifier using a smartphone or tablet. Also, advanced air purifiers with WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity are able to send reports about the unit's status, air quality, maintenance remainders, tech support, and similar.
Some units even feature Voice Prompts that allows the air purifier to report the current condition via built-in speaker - this is a great feature, just be sure to set 'night' hours.
Remote Control via Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant ensures smart home integration of more advanced units. This is a great feature not only for tech enthusiasts, although there are great air purifiers with very simple control panels and with no advanced features present at all - always choose according to your own needs and requirements.
Warranty of air purifiers differ, but they usually come with 'Limited' warranty conditions - units and filters come with different warranty conditions.
Recommended Area/Room Size is the size of the maximum recommended area/room where the air purifier may operate and keep the air in the room at a certain quality level. Area/room size is an approximate value, with CFM being more important and with the CADR and HEPA levels being the most important.
Here is the list of the top HEPA air purifiers for tobacco smoke and smokers in general. Since there are so many rather good units on the market, one may disagree with us. But, we are all different, with different requirements and needs, so be sure to choose according to your own personal preferences.
Good air purifier for smoke doesn't have to be expensive, on a contrary, some most popular and best-buy units are rather affordable.
But, large units with thick layers of activated carbon, high-capacity HEPA air filters, and many other advanced features can come rather pricey. Here is our list of some of the best smoke air purifiers that we believe are the 'best-buy' considering all their features and in the end, their price.
Note: When the new air purifier arrives, be sure to thoroughly read the manual/instructions in order to get accustomed to your new unit. Most units are very intuitive to use but, better safe than sorry.
It has been confirmed that second-hand smoke is a cause of lung cancer in humans by several leading health authorities around the world.
Also, passive smoking increases the risk of various respiratory illnesses in children and adults, including asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia. In pregnant women, it can even cause issues with the baby's development.
Air purifiers for smoke can significantly reduce the number of smoke particles and the amount of toxic chemicals in the air, but the only 100% reliable solution is to - quit smoking ...
Carbon-Monoxide (CO) Warning: Air purifiers do NOT remove carbon monoxide from the air. If there is for some reason a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, use carbon monoxide alarms to warn You about carbon monoxide levels and let the certified professionals check your installations (or whatever may be the source of carbon monoxide).
